Tane Mahuta, Lord of the Forest
In Maori Cosmology, Tane is the son of Ranginui the sky father and Papatuanuku the earth mother. Tane tore his parents apart, breaking their primal embrace, to bring light, space and air and allowing life to flourish. Tane is the life giver. All living creatures are his children. This is the largest living kauri tree in NZ. It is difficult to accurately estimate the age of Tane Mahuta, but it may be that it sprang from seed around 2000 years ago during the lifetime of Christ.

Matua Ngahere
‘Te Matua Ngahere’ (Father of the Forest) is the second largest living kauri tree in New Zealand. He is also noted as being the oldest out of the two largest living kauri trees and is estimated to exceed 2000 years.

Four Sisters
The walk is a short, one-way loop that takes you through kauri and rimu vegetation to see the ‘Four Sisters’, an impressive stand of four tall and graceful kauri trees growing extremely close together.
