The goldrush was immense in the Hokitika region. Especially in the layered brash beddings lots of little nuggets were found and the hill is perforated like a swiss cheese. Eventually, the gold was gone and half the hill washed down the river … now a clever heritage walk circles the area – you can have a look at old fossicking gear, rusty pots and pans, abandonned mines and stunning nature that was flourishing ever since.
