The Nelson and the outlying areas have been settled by Englishmen and Germans in the early 1840’s. The first settlement in today’s Upper Moutere region was called Sarau and while its original buildings are long gone, but still there are some nice places to go, like the St Paul’s Lutheran Church with the famous hand carved wooden panel, depiciting the traditions of working the land and the Moutere Inn, New Zealand’s oldest pub.
