As it has been wet all week and didn’t seem to lighten up we decided to have a little road trip to a nice recreation area called the Nelson Lakes. Lake Rotoiti and Rotoroa lay south about half between Motueka and Nelson at a two hours drive one direction. We went directly for Saint Arnaud to get the best view and a short walk around the peninsula there which brought us from the Indo-Australian Plate to the Pacific Plate and back. Plate tectonics and vulcanism had always been one of my favorite topics in Geography classes at school (how exciting to hear that Mt Tongariro has erupted again after a hundred years!).
